Flickr & YouTube

What is it?

Flickr (www.flickr.com) and YouTube (www.youtube.com) are two popular social media sites that allow you to post, share, and comment on photos and videos.

Flickr is a Yahoo product that allows users to tag photos (like you tag websites in Delicious).  People use Flickr for a variety of reasons:
•    To organize and share photos with family, friends, and the world
•    To search for photos on a certain topic
•    To edit photos

YouTube is for sharing video, rather than photos. This site allows you to upload videos, thus giving the average user an opportunity to reach millions of people for free.

1) Check out Flickr’s website and “Take the Tour" (link is near right side of page). After you’ve learned about what Flickr can do, try searching for photos on topics of interest to you. Search Flickr groups on the same topic. Do you get different results?

2) Go to YouTube and watch a few videos. We suggest:

- Did You Know 4.0 – fascinating information about web 2.0 technologies, including YouTube!
- Dramatic Chipmunk – if you need something short.
- Alberta’s Libraries, Books and Beyond – the award-winning commercials.

3) In your blog, do ONE of the following:

•    Comment on Flickr and YouTube. Were they user-friendly?

OR

•    Comment on the quality, entertainment value, or usefulness of the content on these sites.

  1. These videos can't be downloaded to the work terminals. The flash player needs to be upgraded, and administrative permissions are needed.

  2. Blogerella,

You don't need to download anything for YouTube. If you can't view the YouTube videos on the site, your library may want to let IT know that Flash needs updating.

If you can't see any YouTube videos, don't worry about it. Just focus on Flickr instead. Have fun!
